Sabal palmettos, sometimes called Sabal palms or Cabbage palmettos can be used in a wide variety of landscape styles from tropical and sub tropical to Mediterranean styles. This palm initially appears as fronds growing directly from the ground, but after a few years, begins to develop a unique trunk pattern, formed from the old fronds that have been trimmed off. 

Sabal palmettos are adaptable to many types of soil from brackish coastal soils to salty desert soils. They are very hardy to winter cold and are commonly grown in full sun from Texas to the hot deserts of the southwest.
