Cape Honeysuckle Plant Details
Cape Honeysuckle is a scrambling and fast-growing evergreen shrub that can be trimmed as a medium to large bush or hedge. It grows best when planted in the USDA zones 9-11 and can handle zone 8 with some extra attention and protection through the cold months. This plant can grow however you need it to for your yard, whether that is a shrub or in vine form. It can grow from 3ft. to 10 ft. as a shrub and can grow twice that size in vine form. It looks great in all landscapes, especially Tropical and Mediterranean styles.
Cape Honeysuckle Basic Care
This plant does best in well-drained soil but is highly adaptable to other soil types. The Cape Honeysuckle needs regular watering during its first grow season to establish the roots. Once established, watering should be reduced. During the colder months, they will need protection when temperatures go below freezing to prevent frost-burned leaves or damaged new growth. Fertilize with Moon Valley Nurseries’ own Moon Dust mid-spring through early fall to keep them looking their best. Prune branches as needed for your desired size or shape. We recommend pruning this plant in the spring for best results.
Cape Honeysuckle Landscape Uses
It’s most often used as an informal hedge with a burst of bright orange trumpet-shaped flowers that regularly start blooming in the fall months. It can also be used as a small shrub to add accents of bright colors into your design. It can be pruned into any shape or size, as desired. With a trellis or support ties, this plant can also be used as a vine to cover bare fences or create more privacy. Regardless of how you grow it and where you put, the Cape Honeysuckle will have no problem catching the eye of every passerby.
At Moon Valley Nurseries, we offer vibrant and healthy plants that are ready to provide added value and instant beauty to your home. We also offer a free VIP design consultation at all of our nurseries with an expert landscape designer to turn your ideas into a gorgeous reality.
- BreathtakingOrdered two of their lovely “tree” style cape honeysuckle for my deck. The gentlemen who came out to deliver it transplanted them into a couple of very cool oversized pots and they are the absolute centerpiece of our deck. Full of flowers on this November morning and bees and hummingbird have already taken notice. Thank you S Boyd for recommending, I could not be more thrilled.
