Southern Wax Myrtle

Myrica cerifera

  • Other common names include Southern Bayberry, Candleberry, Bayberry Tree, and Tallow Shrub
  • Large shrub / Evergreen
  • Best plant for formal hedges
  • Small flowers in Late Winter
  • Easy to grow hedge that is great for privacy

The Southern Wax Myrtle is an ornamental beauty featuring aromatic, olive green foliage and a round growth habit, so they are ideal for use as a privacy hedge. If you are looking for an attractive, care free shrub, then look no further than this North American native. Myrica cerifera is heat and drought tolerant and even grows in poor soil. In winter, small clusters of waxy, bluish gray berries appear, adding a nice dose of interest during the season. People love the scented foliage, which is reminiscent of Bayberry candles, in fact, in boiling water separate the wax from the fruit to make candles, so if candle making is your hobby, you will want to have this Wax Myrtle in your yard!

These are fast-growing shrubs that respond well to annual shearing. Plant Southern Wax Myrtle in a location that receives partial to full sun exposure and once established, they require low to moderate watering. Don't have a green thumb? No problem! These are very trouble-free plants that can almost take care of themselves! They are very adaptable, and with the proper fertilizer, you will have a beautiful specimen thriving in your landscape. Find the ideal fertilizers for treating dense soil at any of the Moon Valley Nurseries.
