Goldenrain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata)

Golden Rain Tree

Koelreuteria paniculata

  • Other common names include Pride of India, China Tree, Varnish Tree
  • Small to medium-sized deciduous tree
  • An excellent shade tree with a well-behaved root system
  • Long panicles of fragrant, showy flowers in late spring and summer give way to brown papery capsules that resemble Chinese lanterns
  • Low maintenance tree

The Golden Rain Tree, also known by the botanical name Koelreuteria paniculata, is a beauty all year-long with long panicles of fragrant, showy flowers blooming from late spring through summer, and blue-green foliage that can add fall color to any landscape. Adding to its attractive features are the graceful paper lanterns that can be seen dangling from the branches in fall and winter. As a bonus, it is more than just an ornamental beauty. It is also hardy and can thrive in a wide range of soil conditions. And since they have non-invasive roots, we also like to plant them as a street tree and near patios. We also like to use them as a privacy screen and shade tree.

Native to China, Japan, and Korea, Koelreuteria paniculata trees thrive in a spot with full sun exposure. Once established, the Goldenrain tree has low to moderate water requirements, and we recommend feeding with fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. These are also excellent trees for urban areas because they can tolerate urban stresses such as heat and air pollution and add plenty of natural beauty too!

Moon Valley Nurseries custom grows Golden Rain trees in our local climate, from premium quality specimens so that we can assure their quality is the best you will find anywhere. We like to plant them with other colorful trees and plants such as Crape Myrtle, Lantana, and Pittosporum.
