Borers

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

Borers can cause severe damage and even death to a tree by tunneling within and feeding on the live tissues found in the trunk. This interferes with the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients, as well as weakens the structure of the tree.

SIGN OF INFESTATION

Look for small entry holes throughout the trunk of your tree. These holes will be present year-round. If your tree is infested with borers, its limbs may start to die off. There will be small entry holes along the trunk that are oozing sap. If you peel back some bark, you can also find shallow tunnels underneath.

How to Treat

  1. Prevention – The best way to prevent borers is with a systemic insecticide at the onset of growing season. The pesticide will be absorbed all throughout the tree so that when any borers arrive at the trunk, they will encounter the pesticide before burrowing in.
  2. Fertilizer – Boring insects always seek out weak trees to infest. Therefore, one of the best defenses is to keep your trees healthy and strong all year long with the proper application of Moon Valley Nurseries’ Super Charged Moon Juice and Moon Dust.
  3. Treatment – To effectively treat existing borers and protect from future infestations all at once, couple a systemic insecticide drench with a topical spray of Spinosad. Always follow all instructions on the chemical label.
