Frizzle top

WHAT IS FRIZZLE TOP

Frizzle top is a severe manganese deficiency that can cause the new growth on some palms to emerge stunted and crinkled, earning it the nickname “frizzle top.” Luckily, it can be corrected with proper fertilization and care.

SIGN OF FRIZZLE TOP

Frizzle top can be present during any time of the year, but it will develop during the growing season. It mostly affects the newest fronds at the heart of the palm. A palm with frizzle top will experience yellowing and will put out stunted, distorted fronds. The fronds will also have difficultly opening properly.

How to Treat

  1. Prevention – The best way to avoid an unsightly frizzle top on your palms is to keep them properly nourished and cared for from the start. Ask your Moon Valley Nurseries’ Professional for a copy of our recommended watering and fertilizer guides.
  2. Fertilizer – Palms love warm climates—they also love soils that are high in micronutrients! Give your palms the nutrients they need with regular applications of Moon Microboost and Palm Juice. These blends are specifically formulated with micronutrients such as manganese, iron, zinc, boron, and more to keep them green and glowing all year round.
