WHAT IS FROST DAMAGE

Frost-tender plants can be severely damaged in the event of a cold snap. The damage is caused by the formation of ice crystals in the tissues of the plant. While some cases of frost are only aesthetically damaging, severe cases can be deadly to sensitive species. Preventing frost damage is the best option, however there are steps you can take to help affected plants recover from the cold.

SIGN OF FROST DAMAGE

Frost damage will occur during the winter, but in some cases, it may not appear until spring. It can be found on leaves and the ends of branches. Watch out for severe weather alerts and for Moon Valley Nurseries’ email warnings regarding sever weather warnings. Frost can cause leaves to turn purple and discolored, sometimes suddenly shriveling them and turning them black. Affected branches can fail to produce leaves during the spring.

How to Treat

Prevention – Prior to a cold snap, spray all frost-tender plants with a protective layer of Wilt Stop. This will prevent frost from forming on the surface of the leaves. Be sure to thoroughly cover all surfaces of the leaves. Cover with appropriate non-plastic frost cloth and keep plants healthy before cold weather with season appropriate fertilizing (don’t use heavy fertilizers in winter months). Be sure to heavily water the day of frost to aid in water penetrations and absorption along with creating a humid microclimate.
Treatment – Proper water circulation throughout the plant is critical during cold snaps. Improve water penetration and stimulate the roots using Landscape Soil & Water Conditioner and Super Charged Moon Juice.
