Brazilian Skyflower Details

The Brazilian Skyflower is an evergreen shrub native to southern Florida, West Indies, Brazil, and South American regions. These shrubs are fantastic drought-tolerant plants that produce long narrow clusters of small purple flowers followed by yellow, orange berries that can add a nice splash of color into water-wise landscapes. We love to plant them in any landscape where they can be used as an effective background or screen.

These shrubs grow at their best when they are in warm climates all year long. Because of our warm region, we benefit from enjoying the flowers a bit longer than the rest of the country. It can start producing from early spring to late fall each year. These flowers are sure to bring some visitors to your yard such as the local butterflies and hummingbirds.

Brazilian Skyflower Basic Care

These fast-growing evergreens love to grow where there is full sun to partial shade exposure. Once established, they can grow just fine with low to moderate watering needs. The Brazilian Skyflower become generally more low maintenance to care for, after the roots have established. They do best in well-drained soil but can tolerate soils with high alkaline levels or salty air.

They are cold hardy and they are a popular shrub that can be seen all over the southwestern states, where their ornamental berries and showy flowers add a scenic picture anywhere they are planted! We recommend trimming them in the spring time. This will promote a fuller growth habit, which is especially useful if they’re being used as an informal privacy hedge.

Brazilian Skyflower Landscape Uses

If there is a large, vacant spot in your landscape, consider adding this relatively maintenance-free, and beautiful, Brazilian Skyflower! This shrub can be trimmed low as a small hedge to border your yard or you can let it grow naturally to cover up unsightly brick fences. This shrub can even be used as a backdrop for smaller plants in the landscape.

The Brazilian Skyflower is also becoming a popular choice among people who are looking for a good shrub that does well for topiary and espalier purposes. This shrub is easily trainable and are often trained into a small tree, bush, or vine form. We recommend this plant for the perfect colorful, lower privacy hedge.
