Golden Bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea)
Think of an island paradise and instantly one of the first plants that come to mind is bamboo. One of the best varieties to grow in our region is the Golden Bamboo, Phyllostachys aurea. These beautiful plants are made of long grass like hollow stocks that can reach heights upwards of 15'.
Native to Fujian and Zhejiang in China it often goes by fishpole bamboo do to its whip-like action and ability to be used as a fishing rod. Golden Bamboo is closely related to the grass family and is considered a monocot, however unlike most bamboo species Golden Bamboo is a clumping variety and is easily contained to an area in the yard and containers.
Golden Bamboo has many uses and is great at creating hedges to block unwanted views. This type of bamboo can be planted in narrow areas and works in most landscapes. Once established it becomes an extremely water wise plant and beautiful focal point in your landscape.
