Raywood Ash

Fraxinus oxycarpa 'Raywood'

  • Another common name is Claret Ash
  • Fast-growing deciduous tree with fall color and red fall foliage
  • A great shade tree with a round-headed growth pattern
  • Planted in rows, these are excellent trees for privacy screens
  • One of the best trees for shade that provides fall tree colors

The Raywood Ash is a Mediterranean native that can grow to be a large tree with a round-headed form, capable of providing a huge amount of summer shade! It's a favorite in landscapes throughout the Southwest both for its shade coverage as well as the beautiful fall color it brings to any yard! In the fall, the attractive dark green knife-shaped leaves turn to an alluring red wine hue, providing year-round color!

These are fast-growing trees, and one of the best trees to add a pop of shade and color to any landscape as well as bring your home plenty of curb appeal! For widespread shade, plant them in a grove! They thrive in a location that gets plenty of full sun exposure and once established; they are drought resistant with little to moderate watering requirements.

Once the leaves drop, it can let the warmth of the sun in, and you'll only need to do a one-time easy cleanup! The foliage comes back in the spring at a fast growth rate, just in time to cool off your home and keep you comfortable while you're enjoying your yard!

Raywood Ash trees require moderate levels of water and become drought tolerant once established and perform very well with little maintenance. Because of their deciduous nature, only a one-time clean-up is needed each year, and this is after you have enjoyed these trees' incredible red fall color.

Monthly applications of fertilizer such as our Moon Dust will help these Ash trees explode with shady foliage and make the tree's fall color all the more of a spectacle. Feel free to trim and prune to shape the canopy as desired as Raywood Ash trees handle pruning exceptionally well.

These are excellent companions to other drought-resistant trees such as Chinese Pistache and Brazilian Pepper trees, which we grow and sell at our nurseries throughout the Southwest!
