Hedgehog Cactus Info

The Hedgehog Cactus is a small succulent native to the southwestern United States. This cactus variety is also known as Engelmann’s Hedgehog Cactus or Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus. Named after the animal, it resembles the shape of a hedgehog due to its short stems that slowly grow into a solid mount of spiny stems.

Hedgehog Cacti can grow as little as three stems or more than 50 stems. Each green stem can grow up to one foot high in a cylinder shape. At full growth, this cactus can spread out up to three feet wide. The Hedgehog Cactus can also produce large, bright purple/pink flowers through spring that look as if they pop right out of the cactus. These flowers might bring some pollinators to your yard, like the beautiful local hummingbirds.

Hedgehog Cactus Basic Care

The Hedgehog Cactus is a low-maintenance plant that was made for our region. It thrives in full to partial sun so you can plant it nearly anywhere in your yard. This plant has low-water needs and can tolerate heat and drought-like conditions.

Hedgehog Cactus Landscape Uses

Cacti are great additions to a landscape and can be used in so many ways, which makes them easy to add to any style. This variety can be planted anywhere in the yard with full to partial sun such as a focal point in a desert or xeriscape garden, or in containers to add landscape to your patio. The Hedgehog Cactus looks excellent when planted in rows, especially during the spring blooms.

We planted these below our windowns in my front yard after reading an article that homes with cacti help deter burglers. Our home is already xeroscaped, so adding some cacti to the landscape was simple and fit in well. 10/10
