Fatsia japonica is a bold and tropical-looking evergreen shrub prized for its large, glossy, palmate leaves that can reach up to a foot across. Native to Japan and Korea, this plant brings a lush, architectural element to gardens and indoor spaces alike. Typically growing 5 to 8 feet tall and wide, it forms a rounded, bushy shape with thick stems and deeply lobed, dark green foliage that creates a dramatic visual impact. In late fall or early winter, mature plants produce small white, globe-shaped flower clusters, followed by small black berries—adding subtle seasonal interest.

Fatsia japonica thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or containers on shaded patios. It is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate urban conditions, including pollution and salt. Though it has a tropical appearance, it is surprisingly cold-hardy (typically down to USDA zone 7) and can recover well from frost damage. Its ability to brighten shady areas with bold texture makes it a favorite among landscape designers and indoor plant enthusiasts alike.
