The Gopher Plant (Euphorbia rigida), also known as Silver Spurge, is a striking, drought-tolerant succulent native to the Mediterranean region. It is well-known for its bold, architectural form, with blue-green, spiraling leaves that grow along thick, upright stems. In late winter to early spring, it produces chartreuse-yellow flower clusters that contrast beautifully with its silvery foliage. This unique combination of texture and color makes the gopher plant a favorite for rock gardens, xeriscapes, and modern landscape designs.

One of the gopher plant's greatest strengths is its resilience. It thrives in hot, dry climates, requires little to no maintenance once established, and is highly deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its milky sap, which is toxic if ingested. This same sap is believed to repel gophers and other burrowing pests—hence the plant’s common name. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and while it is not fussy, it does best in poor, rocky soils where other plants might struggle. Its striking form and toughness make it a great choice for gardeners seeking low-water, low-care plants with year-round visual impact.
