Green Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum) is a fast-growing ornamental grass known for its graceful, arching green blades and soft, feathery flower plumes. Native to Africa and the Middle East, this warm-season grass adds movement and texture to the landscape, especially when planted in masses or as a focal point. From late spring through fall, it produces bottlebrush-like flower spikes in shades of pink, purple, or tan that sway gently in the breeze and catch the light beautifully. Its lush, fountain-like form gives it a soft, cascading appearance that works well in borders, containers, or rock gardens.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Green Fountain Grass is heat- and drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance, water-wise landscapes. It typically grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, and though it is considered perennial in warmer climates (USDA Zones 9–11), it’s often grown as an annual in cooler areas. Green Fountain Grass offers year-round interest, minimal upkeep, and a dynamic presence in modern and naturalistic garden designs.
