Mondo grass is a low-growing, evergreen perennial commonly used as a ground cover in landscaping. Native to East Asia, it thrives in a variety of conditions and is valued for its grass-like, arching foliage that forms dense clumps. Although it resembles turfgrass, mondo grass is not a true grass but a member of the Asparagaceae family. It grows slowly and spreads by underground stolons, making it an excellent option for filling in spaces between stepping stones, edging garden beds, or controlling erosion on slopes. Its dark green leaves are typically about 6 to 12 inches long, and in the summer, it produces small, pale violet to white flowers, followed by glossy, blue-black berries.

Mondo grass is highly adaptable and easy to maintain, tolerating full sun to full shade and a range of soil types, although it prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and resists pests and diseases, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance landscapes. There are several varieties, including dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’), which stays even lower to the ground and is often used as a lawn substitute in small spaces. Due to its versatility and neat, tidy appearance, mondo grass is widely appreciated by gardeners and landscape designers alike.
