Mondo grass is a low-growing, evergreen perennial commonly used as a ground cover in landscaping. Although it resembles turfgrass, mondo grass is not a true grass but a member of the Asparagaceae family. Its dark green leaves are typically about 6 to 12 inches long, and in the summer, it produces small, pale violet to white flowers, followed by glossy, blue-black berries.
Mondo grass is highly adaptable and easy to maintain, tolerating full sun to full shade and a range of soil types, although it prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and resists pests and diseases, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance landscapes. There are several varieties, including dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’), which stays even lower to the ground and is often used as a lawn substitute in small spaces.
