Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana) is a striking ornamental grass known for its tall, graceful plumes and bold presence in the landscape. Native to South America, it forms large clumps of arching, slender green leaves that can reach 6 to 10 feet tall, with feathery, silvery-white or pinkish flower plumes rising even higher in late summer to fall. These dramatic plumes, which persist into winter, make Pampas Grass a favorite for adding texture, height, and movement to gardens. It works well as a focal point, windbreak, or privacy screen, particularly in large or open spaces.

Pampas Grass is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a great choice for low-maintenance and xeriscape gardens. Hardy in USDA Zones 7 to 11, it can tolerate heat, poor soil, and coastal conditions. It grows quickly and may require yearly maintenance, including cutting back the dead foliage in late winter and controlling its spread, as it can become invasive in some areas. With proper care and placement, Pampas Grass adds architectural drama and year-round interest to a wide range of landscapes.
