The Australian Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius) is a stunning deciduous tree native to the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia. It is best known for its breathtaking display of bright red, bell-shaped flowers that cover the tree in late spring to early summer, often when the tree has shed its leaves. This dramatic blooming phase creates a fiery, almost surreal appearance—hence its common name. The leaves are large and maple-like in shape (acerifolius meaning “maple-leaved”), adding to the tree's visual interest even when not in bloom.

Reaching heights of 30 to 60 feet, the Australian Flame Tree makes an impressive ornamental feature in parks, streetscapes, and large gardens. It thrives in full sun, tolerates a range of soil types, and is relatively drought-tolerant once established. While it grows best in warm climates, it can handle occasional light frosts. In addition to its striking flowers, the tree produces woody seed pods containing shiny black seeds, which are edible when properly prepared. With its combination of bold seasonal color, adaptability, and low maintenance, the Australian Flame Tree is a favorite for adding drama and elegance to tropical and subtropical landscapes.
