An avocado tree (Persea americana) is a subtropical plant native to Central and South America, known for producing the creamy, nutrient-rich fruit beloved around the world. This evergreen tree can grow up to 80 feet tall in the right conditions, though commercial varieties are typically kept smaller through pruning. Avocado trees thrive in warm, well-drained soil and require plenty of sunlight and moderate water to produce fruit. The tree’s broad, dark green leaves provide dense shade, and its small, greenish-yellow flowers bloom in clusters, often requiring cross-pollination from another avocado tree for optimal fruit yield.

The fruit of the avocado tree grows slowly, taking several months to mature after pollination. Avocados vary in shape, size, and texture depending on the variety—some are smooth and round, while others, like the popular Hass variety, are oval with pebbly skin. Rich in healthy fats, vitamins, and fiber, avocados have become a dietary staple in many cuisines. Beyond its fruit, the avocado tree also plays a role in landscaping due to its attractive foliage and natural canopy.
