Pyrostegia venusta, commonly known as Flame Vine or Orange Trumpet, is a vigorous, woody climbing vine that can be trained into a tree, cover trellises, walls, pergolas, or even grow over small trees and large shrubs, giving the appearance of a "flame-colored tree" when in full bloom. Native to South America, this evergreen climber bursts into vibrant bloom from late fall through early spring, producing masses of brilliant orange, trumpet-shaped flowers that cascade down in dense clusters. These fiery blooms create a stunning visual impact and attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, bringing color and life to the garden when most other plants are dormant.
Though naturally a vine, Pyrostegia venusta can be shaped and trained to grow over a sturdy frame or tree-like structure, effectively creating a small, tree-like form if maintained with regular pruning. In warm climates (USDA Zones 9–11), it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Its dense foliage and dramatic winter flowering make it a standout feature in tropical and subtropical landscapes. When creatively trained, this flame-colored vine can bring the striking appearance of a flowering tree to any garden setting.
