The Purple Orchid, botanical name Bauhinia purpurea is a beautifully structured and blooming tree that offers a unique look to any landscape. Originating from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Southern China, and Japan and admired for its large fragrant blooms. Once established the Purple Orchid tree is drought tolerant making it an excellent tree choice for all of Southern California and the Southwest Region. The Purple Orchid is a fast-growing orchid tree that fits into most landscape sizes. Its slender trunks topped with arching branches are clothed in two-lobed butterfly-shaped leaves.
The Purple Orchid will fill your landscape with color consisting of five-inch wide blooms from September through November and again in late winter to early spring. The Bauhinia pupurea offers a spectacular showy blooming cycle each and every year. Once these are done blooming they are followed by a seed pod that reaches up to 12' long that are slender, brown, and flat that will hang on the tree like ornaments through the winter months. These are deciduous trees but even when bare the unique branching structure gives this tree a beautiful appearance.
These medium-sized trees offer many landscape uses, shade, privacy, and focal. Due to their deep-rooted nature, surface roots are rarely an issue and allow the Purple Orchid tree to be planted nearly anywhere. While these trees may look delicate they are best planted in a full-sun area.
