The Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) is a rare and distinctive species of pine native to the coastal regions of southern California, primarily found on the Channel Islands and a small coastal strip near San Diego. Known for its tall, straight trunk and long, slender needles that grow in bundles of five, the Torrey Pine is one of the rarest pines in North America. It can reach heights of up to 60 feet and is characterized by its resilient nature, thriving in dry, sandy soils and coastal conditions where other trees might struggle. The tree's bark is thick and reddish-brown, adding to its visual appeal. Torrey Pines produce large, elongated cones, which are a food source for local wildlife. Their wood is dense and durable, though due to the tree’s rarity, it is rarely used commercially. With its unique beauty and limited range, the Torrey Pine is an iconic symbol of California's coastal ecology and a protected species.
