Bursage refers to a group of hardy, drought-tolerant plants in the Ambrosia genus, commonly found in arid and semi-arid regions such as the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The most well-known species include White Bursage (Ambrosia dumosa) and Burrobush, both of which are vital components of desert ecosystems like the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. These low-growing, grayish-green shrubs are adapted to survive in poor, sandy soils with minimal water. Though they may not be showy in appearance, bursage plants play an important ecological role by stabilizing soil, reducing erosion, and providing ground cover that helps retain moisture.
