The Beaver Tail Prickly Pear is a southwest native often confused with the traditional prickly pear. However, there are big differences in growth and color, with the Beaver Tail Prickly Pear producing deep pink blooms throughout the summer.
Beaver Tail Prickly Pear will turn light purple during the cooler months, providing a unique seasonal change with a traditional-looking cactus. Moderately fast growers, Beaver Tail Prickly Pear Cactus usually grows to about 3 feet tall, and roughly 3-4 feet wide. The cactus is ideal for desert gardens, xeriscaping, or rock gardens and requires minimal water once established. It is highly drought-tolerant and can handle extreme heat and full sun exposure.
The name comes from the shape of the tightly clustered cactus leaves that grow out from the structure resembling an actual beaver's tail. This is one Arizona native that's best suited for full sun exposure, so don't worry about this cactus in the heat. Visit one of our huge nurseries and see these cacti for yourself!
