The Chihuahuan sage (commonly known as Leucophyllum laevigatum or sometimes Texas sage) is a hardy, evergreen shrub native to the arid Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It thrives in dry, sunny environments and is well-known for its drought resistance, making it a popular choice in xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens. The plant typically grows to about 3 to 5 feet tall and features silvery-green foliage that reflects sunlight and helps conserve water. Its funnel-shaped, purple to lavender flowers bloom in cycles throughout the warm months, often triggered by increased humidity or rain, giving it the nickname “barometer bush.”
This plant plays an important ecological role in its native environment, offering shelter and nectar for pollinators like bees and butterflies. It is also favored in landscaping due to its ability to grow in poor soils and its resistance to pests and diseases. While not a true sage in the botanical sense, its appearance and scent are similar to those of other sage species. The Chihuahuan sage's durability and ornamental appeal make it an excellent addition to sustainable landscapes in arid and semi-arid regions.

"These plants give it to you twice! They have a super cool looking leaf and color, then when they bloom it's so PRETTY! We used these to create a hedge that was low water that would go around the side of our house on the road side. It keeps the debris down and is so easy to maintain. We tell people all the time, look for the purple wall and you've found out house!"
